This Puja, West Bengal government employees can raise a toast to Goddess Durga with two cheers: 10 days of holiday and an advance salary to add punch to the heady cocktail.

The employees, aggrieved over remaining deprived of huge of dearness allowance arrears, can find some solace in the twin bonanza. The total DA arrears of the state government employees, when compared to that of central government employees, stands at 42% at present — the highest among all state government employees in the country.

The vacation for Bengal government employees begins tomorrow, October 17. They are to report for duty only on Monday, October 26 — after soaking in the festive spirit over two weekends. And, their salary for October shall be in by today!

“As a rule, the salary for October is supposed to be disbursed only in November. But the government understands that this being the festive season, the employees will incur additional expenses. Therefore, those willing can have their entire salary for October as advance,” an official at the state secretariat, Nabanna, told HT.

However, the prolonged holiday has been welcomed by all. “This is really a bonus. In fact, since the Trinamool Congress government came to power, we are enjoying a longer puja holiday than what we did during the Left Front days. The pinch of the DA arrears is there but this vacation is some compensation,” an employee of the land reforms department said.
