To find out why the costly glass panels installed at the new terminal were falling to pieces at regular intervals, the airport authorities have sent some cracked samples to the US for chemical examination. This was revealed to HT — which carried the report on Friday — by Trinamool MP Saugata Roy, who is also the chairman of the airport advisory committee.
“Samples of the shattered glass have already been sent to the US. We expect a report from them by Monday,” Roy told HT after inspecting the new terminal building on Friday. “We decided to get expert opinion as no one here has any clue why the glass is cracking,” he added.
Ever since the swanky new terminal came up, glass pieces have been falling off the huge panels. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) that built the building had to replace at least 150 pieces of glass each measuring 4.5 sq metres. The terminal building has glass sheets covering an area of 5 lakh sq ft. The modernisation was carried out by the AAI costing over Rs. 2,300 crore.
