Ex-gratia paid to families of 56 of 112 Jnaneswari victims

kolkata Updated: Jul 26, 2010 21:36 IST

The families of 56 of the 112 identified victims of the Jnaneswari Express disaster have been given the announced ex gratia payment of Rs five lakh each, South Eastern Railway sources said on Monday.

They said the families of 47 other victims were paid Rs 25,000 each, but payment of the remaining amount by cheque was being delayed owing to non availability of bank accounts and problems of legal heirship. Efforts were being made to hand over the ex gratia at the earliest.

While 150 persons died in the accident, 112 bodies have been identified, including eight, which were identified recently through DNA tests. Payment to the next of the kin of the remaining 38 victims cannot be made unless the bodies are identified by the state authorities.

The process of giving a job in the Railways to one person in the family of those dead has been initiated, the sources said.
