There will be fresh investigation into the Rabindranath Tagore Nobel medallion theft case, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has said, despite the CBI’s closure of the case.
Banerjee said at a public rally in Bolpur on Monday: “Our government will start a fresh investigation into the Nobel heist (along with some other murder cases) … I can also ensure there will not only be investigation but the accused will be convicted.”
However, the promise of reinvestigation has led to mixed reactions among the people.
“I have heard about the promise by Mamata Banerjee from the media. The closure of the Nobel heist case by the CBI was a sad decision. But if the government asks the CBI to reopen the case, we should welcome that,” said Visva-Bharati public relations officer Amitabha Choudhury. Cynicism rules.
Educationist Bishnu Mukherjee said: “It is nothing but a political gimmick before the assembly elections. She has tried to make this sentimental subject an issue to bag more votes.”
Newspaper vendor Debasish Ghosh also sounded sceptical.
“Do you think the stolen medallion could be recovered after so many years? I have my doubts.”
