A student of Class 12 and a resident of Andul in Howrah tried to commit suicide on Wednesday after she was molested by a few locals on Tuesday night.

Though she was saved in the nick of time by the members of her family, the girl is still battling for life in a hospital, sources said.

The slew of assaults has forced women to hit the streets.

According to the complaint filed by the girl’s father, the incident of molestation took place around 8pm at Panchpara in Andul in Howrah on Tuesday when the girl was returning home from tuition.

She was accompanied by her boyfriend when four local youths - Dipak Das, Piyus Das, Sonai Das and Sushil Kumar Das - intercepted them. The youths allegedly snatched their mobile phones and beat them up. They then dragged the girl to a nearby bush and molested her.

The incident happened barely 100 meters away from the girl’s house.

When the duo raised an alarm, her family members went out to see what was happening.

They then chased away the miscreants and rescued the victim and her boyfriend.

After returning home, she hardly spoke anything and didn’t even take her food properly.

Unable to bear the humiliation, on Wednesday morning around 11.30am she tried to hang herself from a ceiling fan in a room on the top floor of her house.

The family members somehow saved her and took her to a hospital where she was in a critical condition till last reports came in. The girl’s body bore injury marks, sources said.

Her father lodged a written complaint with the police at Nazirganj investigation centre, which is under the jurisdiction of Sankrail police station.

All the four miscreants have been accused of molestation, but are still on the run. “Search is on to find the accused,” a police officer said.

Earlier, in July this year, a 12-year-old minor died after being molested and then set afire in Howrah.

The incident happened at Tinkorinath Bose Lane under the jurisdiction of Golabari police station.

The prime accused, an 18-year old youth, Kundan Malik, was later arrested.

Kundan had alle gedly molested the girl when she stepped out of her house to answer nature’s call.

He set her on fire when she resisted and threatened to narrate the incident to her parents.
