The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha, which backed expelled BJP leader Jaswant Singh in winning the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat, has expressed hope that the party will not “shy away” from creating a Gorkhaland state.

“We are confident that even with Singh’s expulsion, the BJP will not shy away from its responsibility towards Gorkhaland as the issue was included in its manifesto. Besides, it is also the matter of BJP’s sincerity,” GJM publicity secretary Harka Bahadur Chettri told PTI over phone.

Chettri said that the GJM has adopted a wait and watch policy on the situation arising after Singh’s expulsion.

“We have not yet taken a decision this way or that. Our alliance is with the BJP and not an individual. No policy decision has been taken. If we are forced to take a decision we will do so keeping in view the interest of the people of Darjeeling,” he said.

Asked about reports that GJM leaders met Singh in Delhi on Sunday and promised to continue to support him after his ouster from BJP, he said that former external affairs minister is a member of parliament from Darjeeling and the delegation must have met him to express their sympathy.

“Till now all negotiations on Gorkhaland were done without Singh and progress has been achieved. But having said that, now we believe our MP will be in a better position to create new links and will have more space for future negotiations with the government,” he said.
