GOVERNOR GOPAL Krishna Gandhi on Monday said CPM patriarch Jyoti Basu is the right person to bring peace in war-torn Nandigram.
Gandhi met Basu at his Salt Lake residence on Monday. “I appealed to Jyotibabu to resume his efforts at establishing peace, confidence and security in the state. I have full confidence that his initiative will succeed…,” the Governor said.
Basu did not comment on the meeting. But sources close to him said Gandhi had gifted a copy of A Frank Friendship: Gandhi and Bengal, edited by the Governor.
Gandhi, however, did not seem forthcoming while talking about Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. When asked if he would meet him, he said: “The Chief Minister will have to discuss it with me. He will take adequate steps to ensure the CRPF can enter Nandigram.”
Gandhi’s meeting with Basu reflects his faith in the administration and Bhattacharjee. Sources said it could lead to another showdown between the Governor and the CPM. Party state secretary Biman Bose criticised the Governor, saying any decision to involve Basu will be taken by the party after holding discussions. “In our party, we do not work as individuals nor do we take decisions individually,” he said.
