Spectacular achievements in different spheres of mathematics globally in last four years will be the theme of International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) to be held for the first time in India from August 19.

Altogether 3,500 mathematicians from the country and abroad will take part in the nine-day affair at Hyderabad, Profesoor S C Bagchi of the Indian Statistical Institute said in Kolkata on Monday.

Celebrated mathematicians including David Aldous (US), H Furstenberg (Israel), N G O Bao Chan (Vietnam), A N Parshin (Russia) and Clare Voisin (France), besides R Balasubranian (India) will deliver plenary lectures at the Congress.

"There will be 200 lectures in the Congress, of which 20 plenary lectures will be given by distinguished mathematicians," Bagchi said.

Of the total participants, nearly 1,000 will be from India, he added.

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Department of Science and Technology (DST) are the two main sponsors of the Congress, Bagchi said.

The last international Congress of Mathematicians was held in Madrid, Spain four years ago.
