Union finance minister Arun Jaitley is likely to attend Bishwa Banga Sanmelan. Additional personal secretary to Jaitley, SP Bhatia, told HT that the minister would be in Kolkata on January 7, the opening day of the two- day industry meet.

The minister has a couple of programmes in Kolkata on January 7, including a party programme. Although I am sure about his schedule, but most probably he will spare some time for the meet: Bhatia said.

State finance and commerce & industries minister Amit Mitra has personally invited Jaitley. Mitra has also invited Union shipping, road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari. However, despite repeated attempts it could not be confirmed whether Gadkari would also be present.

Jaitley will explain why the introduction of goods and service tax (GST) is good for the economy. The minister will also explain why foreign direct investment (FDI) in the defence sector will help in developing indigenous technology.
