The condition of CPI-M patriarch Jyoti Basu was extremely critical on Saturday and except for his heart all vital organs have failed, an attending doctor said.
"His heart is putting up a fight. Other than that his other organs are not functioning. His condition is extremely critical," Dr T S Kukreja, Executive Vice-President of AMRI Hospital where the 95-year-old Basu is admitted, told PTI.
"His cardiac condition is poor, his lungs are functioning partially and his kidneys are not functioning and he is on dialysis," Kukreja said.
Hospital Executive Director D N Agarwal told reporters that Basu was on full ventilatory support and there was a sudden drop in his blood pressure last night, "but it was managed with a high dose of blood pressure stabilising drug, Inotropes."
There was also a further drop in his urine output, he said, adding Basu had been put on Slow Low Efficiency Daily Dialysis (SLEDD) which takes eight hours.
