Police arrested driver of an Uber cab for allegedly misbehaving with a woman passenger on board and threatening her with dire consequences late on Tuesday night.
According to the complaint, the woman – a scribe with a reputed pan-India English Daily – took an Uber cab from her office on Camac Street. She was heading towards her home at Highland Park off EM Bypass on the south east fringes of the city. En route a severe altercation took place between the driver and the rider over the routes to be taken.
“Once I boarded the taxi I mentioned the driver on the route that has to be taken. I take the route regularly because that’s the shortest one from my office to home. Not once, but thrice, the driver deliberately changed the route and I had to literally pursue him to take the shortest route. On the last occasion he stopped the cab, turned back and literally threatened me using abusing languages,” the victim told HT.
The woman then called up the helpline of Kolkata Police and within the next five minutes a sub-inspector and a constable of Survey Park police station rushed to the spot and detained the errant driver Mohammed Qurban. He was later arrested.
“There was a verbal argument between the driver and the rider about the route taken. The rider pressed the in-app SOS button, which alerted our Incident Response Team and the police. The police immediately reached the location and took appropriate action. We have suspended the driver and we are assisting the police in their investigation with all necessary information,” an Uber spokesperson in Kolkata claimed.
Police has slapped a case under section 509 (molestation) and was later released on bail.
