A 23-year-old maid at a home in Ranikuthi jumped off the roof of a three-storey building when the landlord's son allegedly attempted to molest her on Wednesday afternoon.
Cops say that the woman, who worked for a tenant in the house, had gone to the roof to put some washed clothes out to dry. Suddenly, Souvik Majumdar, son of the landlord Shibnath Majumdar went up to the rood through the drainpipe and molested her.
Hearing the girl's cries for help, a woman from the adjacent building tried to reach the roof and save her. Souvik locked the door and attacked the girl with a sharp weapon.
This is when the 23-year-old jumped from the roof to save her life. She has been severely injured and is admitted at MR Bangur Hospital with head injuries.
Cops from the Jadavpur police station arrested Souvik. His family members claim that he has been suffering from mental ailments for the last few years.
However, neighbours held the landlord and his family members responsible. Cops have interrogated the family, looking for leads about why Souvik was allowed to go up to the terrace despite having a history of mental illness.
The police are verifying the family's claims and are likely to send Souvik to a state-run mental hospital for his medical examination. After preliminary interrogations, cops have concluded that Souvik is indeed a psychiatric patient. "Police have already started a case against him," said joint commissioner (Crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh.
