In order to push ahead with the federal front, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee is even ready to join hands with Mulayam Singh Yadav provided the Samajwadi Party (SP) severs ties with the Congress, senior TMC leaders told HT.

Trinamool has already sent feelers to all regional parties to form the front, including to the Samajwadi Party (SP) chief. Mulayam, who is expected to do well in the UP Lok Sabha polls, is believed to be emerging as a key player in forming the next government. Both TMC and Congress are going all out to woo the SP.

Mamata Banerjee, who is busy campaigning for the panchayat polls, will discuss formation of the new front after the rural polls. She is trying to rope in parties like JDU, BJD and even TRS to the federal front, staying off from both the Congress and the BJP in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls next year. “We never said if Samajwadi Party wants to join the ‘federal front’ we would refuse them. Our party chief Mamata Banerjee has given a call to all regional parties, many of which are in touch with us. Everyone is welcome. However, Mulayam will have to sever ties with the UPA,” said Sultan Ahmed, Trinamool MP and core committee member.

When asked about the rift between Mamata and Mulayam following the issue of supporting Pranab Mukherjee as the presidential candidate, Ahmed said, “Those issues are history. Let bygones be bygones. We have no grudge against any one. If Mulayam Singh wants to be a part of the federal front, he is welcome.”

“We too are for a non-Congress, non-BJP alliance. The Congress would surely lose power and the BJP will not be successful. We expect to get 50 plus seats in UP, and Mamata Banerjee would also do well in Bengal. After Lok Sabha polls, there will be a third front that will be a deciding factor,” said Kiranmoy Nanda, general secretary of the Samajwadi Party. Nanda said that the SP and TMC have buried differences, which surfaced during the presidential polls.
