West Bengal chief minister designate Mamata Banerjee will be meeting ex-CPI(M) leader Somnath Chatterjee this evening. The meeting may hold political significance as Mamata's victory ended 34-year long Left rule in the state. Somnath Chatterjee was expelled from CPI(M) when he refused his party's whip to vote against the government in the July 2008 vote of confidence in Parliament.
Chattejee had called up Mamata’s Kalighat party office on Saturday night to congratulate her for her historic victory. Mamata Banerjee in turn called him up on Sunday thanking him for his congratulatory message.
Mamata had defeated Chatterjee from the Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency in 1984. Banerjee was a Congress member at that time.
