A 19-year-old man was shot at on Saturday while trying to protect his friend from delinquents.
The incident occurred at around 2pm in front of Lake View Park when two Class 10 students, Pritha Das and Payal Bharati, were returning from tuition classes. While they were walking, four allegedly drunk men on a motorbike and cycles made obscene gestures at them and fled away.
Meanwhile, Mangal Sardar, who is a neighbour and good friend of Payal, passed by the area.
"My son had returned from work and went out with some friends for an afternoon stroll. Payal met Mangal on the way and recounted the incident. Meanwhile, two of the youths again started following the girls. Angered, Mangal confronted the men and an argument broke out. One of the youths then fired at Mangal," said Bhola Sardar, the victim's father.
Mangal, a resident of Indiranagar in Dumdum Naupara, took a bullet in his right shoulder and was admitted to R G Kar hospital, where his condition was stated as stable.
“Mangal has given us a detailed description of the two suspects. Based on those, we have made a sketch of the suspects. We have launched a manhunt for them,” Biswajit Ghosh, ADCP, Belgharia said.
“Mangal used to consider Payal as his sister. He always protested against any wrongdoing. Saturday was no different,” said Mangal’s friend.
This is a near-repeat of an incident in 2011 when a 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death in Barasat for protesting against some men harassing his sister.
