Maoist mines kill two jawans in Bengal

A landmine blast killed two jawans of the combined forces at Pirakata in West Midnapore district on Friday.

The area is in the heart of the Maoist dominated region of Bengal, about 200 km to the west of Kolkata.

The two jawans killed are Aloke Mandal of Indian Reserve Battalion and Srikanta Banerjee of state armed police succumbed to their injuries in Midnapore hospital.

With these two killings the total nnumber of security men killed stands at eight.

The mine also injured three jawans of state armed police. A villager, Aswini Mahato, who was harvesting his crop has been injured in the gunbattle.

The blast took place on a road when the combined forces were combing the area.

After the blast, there was an exchange of fire between the combined forces and the Maoists. The area is under Salboni police station.
