Sayan (Babai), 22 — son of state horticulture and food processing minister Ujjwal Biswas — who attempted suicide on Sunday died in Apollo Hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday at about 1.40 pm.

The body was sent to NRS hospital for post mortem. Soon after hearing the news of death, Trinamool leader Mukul Roy went to Apollo Hospital and consoled the deceased’s family.

Most of Trinamool MLAs like Kallol Khan, Pundarikakshya Saha, Abanimohan Joyardar and so many Trinamool leaders from Nadia district rushed to NRS hospital. According to close aides of Ujjwal, chief minister Mamata Banerjee inquired regularly about Sayan’s condition. She also sent her condolences to Ujjwal over telephone. Sources said Sayan’s body would be taken to Nadia’s Krishnagar on Wednesday night.

Sayan attempted suicide by pouring petrol on his body on September 30 at about 1.30 am. Trinamool sources close to the minister said Sayan had an affair with a girl from neighbouring Dhubulia but his father was opposed to it. Sources added that Sayan had a quarrel with his father over the issue that night.
