Sleuths of Kolkata Police detective department arrested Mohammed Wasim, a staffer of the Indian Museum, in connection with the rape and duping of a Japanese woman.

The cops arrested him from Kolkata on Monday night. On Tuesday he was produced in a city-based court and was remanded in judicial custody. With this arrest, the cops have picked up six people in connection with the incident.

“Wasim is an exhibit cleaner of Indian Museum and has been picked up from AK Mohammed Siddique Lane late on Monday night,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police detective department. According to the officer Wasim drove the vehicle in which the Japanese woman travelled. He took her to Digha and later to Bodh Gaya in Bihar.

“He was a part of the team that molested the woman in Digha and later he drove the vehicle the woman travelled in to Bodh Gaya where she was gang raped,” the officer added. The cops are looking for the vehicle the woman travelled in.

On December 26, a Japanese woman in her early 20’s lodged a complaint with cops of Park Street police station that she was duped and raped by a gang. She informed the Japanese Consulate which contacted Kolkata Police and said their citizen was duped and raped. The probe was handed over to Kolkata Police detective department.

During investigation, the police came to know that the woman was taken to Digha in East Midnapore and later to Bodh Gaya in Bihar and the culprits raped her and took her all belongings and also withdrew money from her account using her ATM card.

The police said the woman got introduced to a guide who knows Japanese and won her over. He and his associates took her to Bodh Gaya where they raped and confined her. The woman complained that she was taken to the ATM where the miscreants forced her to withdraw money which they later took from her.

During investigation, the police got the footage of the CCTV of the ATM and came to know about the culprits and arrested two from Gaya in Bihar with the help of local police. Another three were arrested from Kolkata and acting on the basis of their information Wasim was nabbed on Monday night.

The gang operated from Kolkata and used to dupe and sometimes physically abuse Japanese tourists.
