Cops of Kalna railway police have failed to find an eyewitness in connection with the death of Sujaya Basak alias Rama, a class 12 student and a resident of Nasratpur, Samudragarh, who was pushed off a running train on Saturday morning between Nabadwip and Kalna railway stations in Burdwan district.
The cops have arrested Satyajit Basak alias Shantu, the prime accused and a student. "We have arrested Shantu Basak on the basis of the complaint of the victim's family and our investigation is on. This much I can say at present," Dilip Mitra, the director-general (DG) of railway police, told HT.
On Saturday morning Sujaya along with her friends had been to her private tutor at Nabadwip. When they returned they saw Shantu waiting at the railway platform. Sujaya boarded in the women's compartment and Shantu too followed her. In the compartment, they got engaged in a heated argument and Sujaya was later found lying beside railway tracks.
After the fall, she was rushed to a local hospital where she was declared bought dead. The family members and the locals took the body of the victim and staged a demonstration demanding immediate legal action in front of the Kalna railway police station. But the railway police allegedly tried to side step the matter claiming that the area where the body was found falls under the jurisdiction of district police.
The situation turned worse, and the DG railway police had to intervene and according to his direction, the police had to start the case and finally on Sunday night, Shantu was picked up from his residence under Purbasthali police station.
"During interrogation, the accused claimed that he had an affair with Sujaya and for last few days, they had a problem regarding an issue. He admitted that he got engaged in a heated argument with the victim but at the same time he rubbished the allegation of murder and we, till date could not find any eyewitness which is very necessary for this case," said an officer of Kalna railway police.
