Now it seems that women are not safe even inside our state-run hospitals. A 36 year-old mentally challenged woman was raped by a Group D employee of the state-run Lumbini Park Mental Hospital at Picnic Garden on Monday night.
The hospital authorities lodged a complaint of rape with the Kasba police station on Tuesday morning, leading to the arrest of the 28-year-old accused.
The incident adds another gory chapter to the gruesome series of atrocities against women in Bengal over the past few months. Those were dark portents, but worse was to follow at Lumbini Park.
Premnath Prasad, a Group-D employee, was found walking out of a ladies’ toilet of the hospital on Monday night, the police said. Nurses on duty later found a 36-year-old mental patient inside the toilet in a traumatised condition.
They informed the hospital authorities of the incident. Prasad could not give satisfactory answers to why he had entered a toilet in a female ward.
“We sent the woman to hospital for a medical examination after starting a case of rape against the accused.
“During interrogation, however, Prasad flatly denied that he had raped the woman, ”Sakilur Rahaman, officer-in-charge of Kasba police station, said.
The police are quite certain that the incident involved molestation, but did not rule out the possibility of rape before the woman’s medical examination is over.
