Over 100 workers killed in CWG, Metro projects: CITU

The CITU on Wednesday alleged the Centre of hushing up the death of over 100 workers in accidents during construction work for the Commonwealth Games and the Metro Railway extension project in the last three-and-a-half years at the national capital.

"Government estimate is that 49 persons died in accidents during construction work for the Commonwealth Games and the Metro Railway expansion work undertaken concurrently in last three-and-a-half years in Delhi, but we have reports from NGOs and mass organisations that over 100 contractors' workers were killed which the government has been suppressing," CITU All-India General Secretary Tapan Sen told PTI.

Sen claimed that there was no official statement about how many affected families were given compensation by the Delhi government, "which is tactfully hiding the facts." It was extremely unfortunate that the government had taken the opportunity of lack of awareness among the labourers, mostly migrant, about labour laws, he said.

The issue was raised by him in the last session of Parliament, Sen said, "but the government seems to be callous and indifferent to the gross violation of all labour laws." The CITU leader also alleged that poor unorganised labourers, engaged by promoters in CWG villages and in other places were not given minimum wages.
