Train services in Howrah-Amta section remained suspended for nearly three hours on Tuesday after passengers of two trains ransacked Bargachhia station and obstructed the tracks demanding their trains be allowed to depart first.
According to South Eastern Railway officials the trouble started at around 7:28 am when the Howrah-bound HA-82 and HA-83 on way to Amta arrived at Bargachhia station. While HA-82 was running five minutes late, HA-83 was 15 minutes behind schedule.
While the railway control staff wanted to clear HA-83 first on the single-track section, passengers of HA-82 insisted that their train be allowed to leave first.
This led to an altercation among the passengers of the two trains and the railway staff. The passengers attacked the
station building and damaged doors, windows, furniture and equipment, the officials said.
Station manager R N Samanta alleged that he and some of his staff were heckled by the passengers.
Normal train services in the section resumed from around 11.00 am after RPF and Government Railway Police personnel intervened, the officials said.
