Social activist Medha Patkar was arrested along with few other human rights activists on Friday near Debra, 35 km from Midnapore, on their way to Lalgarh where prohibitory orders were in force. They were later released on personal bonds.
Patkar was stopped by the police near 12 Mile Toll Plaza on Bombay Road. An argument broke out between the activists and the police, and Patkar and others were arrested. Patkar said that they would move the High Court in order to go to Lalgarh without any problem.
Meanwhile, Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen said the arrests were preventive in nature. “The situation at Lalgarh is tense and if the celebrities go there, the police will be hardpressed to give attention to them which is not desirable.”
