Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's scheduled visit to the metropolis on Wednesday to attend the Asiatic Society's post-bicentennial silver jubilee celebrations and inaugurate the 150th foundation of St Xavier's College is off.
"The Prime Minister is not coming tomorrow," West Bengal Chief Secretary Asok Mohan Chakraborty said briefly.
Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen, now in Bhubaneswar, told PTI over telephone that he had information that the Prime Minister was not visiting the metropolis tomorrow.
Neither the chief secretary nor the home secretary cited the reason why the Prime Minister's visit was not taking place.
A spokesman of the Asiatic Society said its General Secretary R Chakraborty was intimated by the Prime Minister's Office that the visit has been put off.
Singh was scheduled to address the concluding programme of the Society's post-bicentennial silver jubilee.
Sources at the St Xaviers' College, also said the Prime Minister was not coming.
