A police officer was today injured in a group clash between bus workers owing allegiance to rival trade unions in South Parganas district in Kolkata, police said.

The clash broke out in Diamond Harbour area when CPI(M)-backed CITU activists allegedly beat up their supporter for switching over to Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC) after which the two sides exchanged brickbats.

Inspector-in-Charge of Diamond Harbour Sanjiv Chakraborty, who reached the spot with his force to control the situation, was injured when he was hit by a brick.

Police then used canes to disperse the clashing groups.

CITU leader Bijoy De alleged that one of its camp offices was destroyed by INTTUC activists, a charge denied by the latter.

Meanwhile, traffic on the National Highway was disrupted as both the groups set up road blocks, police said.
