In a shocking incident, a 16-year-old girl set herself ablaze on Saturday after her parents pressurised her to join flesh trade. The incident took place at Yugpur village under Nakashipara police station in Nadia.
The police said the deceased appeared for madhyamik examination this year and used to live with her grandparents as her parents worked in Delhi. Local sources said whenever the victim’s parents visited her, they used to persuade her to go to Delhi with them and join prostitution.
On Saturday morning, when her parents again started pressurising her to go to Delhi, she refused them.
They then beat her up badly. Unable to take the pressure anymore, the girl locked herself up in a room and set herself afire.
On seeing smoke billowing out of the house, neighbours rescued the girl and rushed her to Bethuadahari rural hospital. She was then referred to Shaktinagar District Hospital in Krishnagar where she succumbed to burn injuries.
Following the girl’s death, angry neighbours beat up the parents. The victim’s grandmother lodged a complaint against the victim’s parents and her maternal uncle based on which the police arrested the three. They will be produced before the court in Krishnagar on Sunday.
“My granddaughter used to live with me since she was nine months old. Amar chhele o bouma amar natnike nongra kaje lagabe bole Delhi-te niye jete cheyechhilo. Kintu se raji hoy ni. O porasuno korte cheye chhilo. Amar chhele o bouma aj sokale take khub mardhor korechhilo. (My son and daughter-in-law wanted to take my granddaughter along with them to Delhi and engage her in flesh trade.
“But she never wanted to do any such thing. She wanted to study. They also beat her up today morning),” the grandmother said.
