How to reach: Take Shantiniketan Express and Viswa Bharati Fast Passenger to reach Bolpur. The sanctuary is an hour’s drive. In case you plan a road trip, it takes about 3-4 hours to reach Ballavpur from Kolkata.
Where to stay: The Park House, a luxurious cozy private resort, is located close to the entrance to the wildlife sanctuary. This apart, there are also some hotels in the area.
Covering approximately 200 hectares, Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the outskirts of Bolpur town. The sanctuary is home to three large lakes and these are vantage points for the bird watchers. The sanctuary has a deer conservation park and it is home to a large number of Cheethals (Spotted Deer), Blackbucks and animals such as jackals. A walk down the jungle path to any of the five watchtowers is a must for all visitors. The sanctuary has a dense local vegetation of Sal, Akashmoni, Sishoo, Cashewnut, Amlaki, Bahera, Haritaki and other trees. The most popular sightseeing spots near Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary, is Visva Bharati campus and its different departments, the most notable being Kala Bhavan. A stroll on the banks of the Khowai and Kopai rivers can be a good option on lazy afternoons. There are few tribal villages in the eastern fringes of the sanctuary where you can have a close look at village life.
