Marxists don’t usually mix politics and pujas, but since votebank is at stake, maybe this concession can be allowed.

While former land reforms minister Rezzak Mollah has made headlines by announcing his decision to go on a Haj trip, former CPI(M) MP Md Salim is all set to grace the inauguration of a community Durga Puja in the New Market area where the local CPI(M) councillor, Sheila Kapoor, is chairman of the committee that organises the puja.

“I am directly involved with the Durga Puja as chairman of the committee for seven years, ever since I was elected as councillor for the first time and this time I have approached Salimda to inaugurate the puja and he has agreed,” Kapoor said.

But Md Salim said he was neither the chief guest nor the inaugurator though his name has been printed in hoardings. “The organisers are our supporters. They got a little over-enthusiastic and put my name on the hoardings. I promised to visit the pandal but would not inaugurate it since it clashes with the ethics of our party,” Salim told HT.

In 2006, a Durga Puja committee in North Kolkata had approached Left Front chairman Biman Bose to inaugurate an exhibition on former CPI(M) state secretary Anil Biswas. Initially, Bose agreed but then backed out.
