Three years after Mamata Banerjee famously upended his hopes of manufacturing the Nano car in West Bengal, Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata on Sunday praised the chief minister for her deft handling of the devastating fire at Kolkata’s AMRI hospital.

“The swift and firm action of the chief minister is commendable,” Tata tweeted.

Tata also lauded the three valiant staff members who lost their lives while trying to rescue patients trapped inside. Ninety-two people were killed in the inferno.

“The heroic action of the three deceased staff members also needs recognition. Doctors and attendants allegedly leaving patients to die unattended in these circumstances is unbelievable and deserves condemnation. The deaths of several patients are deplorable and inexcusable,” he said in his message.

Tata was forced to shut down the Nano factory at Singur town in September 2008 following massive protests led by Banerjee.

The two are engaged in a bitter legal battle over the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Bill of 2011 that allowed the cancellation of a 99-year-lease signed with Tata for nearly 1,000 acres for his Nano factory.
