Relatives protest after baby switch

Protests hit RG Kar Medical College and Hospital from Thursday night after a patient’s relative alleged their newborn baby boy was switched for a girl. l. A five-member committee has been deployed by the hospital superintendent to investigate the matter.

Sarbani Begum, a Narayanpur (Airport police station area) resident was admitted to the state-run hospital on Wednesday night in the gynaecology department. According to the allegations of Begum and her husband Abdul Sadik, she delivered a male child. But when the newborn was brought to the mother on Thursday night, she said it was a girl child.

“The patient’s family and relatives started protesting, which continued till Friday morning. However, nobody lodged a complaint with us,” said Ajay Roy, the hospital superintendent.

He added, “We have formed a five-member committee to investigate the case, despite no official complaint till Friday evening.”

Roy is hoping to get the report of the investigation by Saturday, and further actions will be taken thereafter. Meanwhile, Gaurav Sharma, DC North also said, they are keeping a close watch on the incident and waiting for the hospital reports.

Mentally challenged raped
A mentally challenged woman was allegedly raped, a senior police officer said.

The woman, who is in her mid-twenties, was raped by a watchman of an abandoned building in Haridevpur area in the southern part of the city, said Subrata Maitra, DC (Behala).

“An FIR has been lodged. The woman alleged that she was raped by the watchman who has been absconding,” Maitra said.
