Preparations are on to welcome new guests at the Bidhannagar City Police Station. Sources have said that the township’s cops are making sure that no problems crop up when their very own dog squad is introduced at the station. Once this canine unit is set up, the Bidhannagar City Police will be the first commissionerate to have its own dog squad.

Cops have already marked an area at New Town Police Station in Rajarhat, where a kennel will be built to house these faithful hounds. According to their initial plans, the Bidhannagar City Police would have two dogs to begin with, and additional recruits brought in gradually.

“AB Dastidar, officer-in-charge of New Town Police Station has been entrusted with the responsibility of the formation of the dog squad,” Santosh Nimbalkar, additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP), Bidhannagar City Police, said.

Of the two dogs, one will be a sniffer and the other a tracker. They will be trained by experts from Latbagan Dog Squad in Barrackpore. After training, the dogs will join the existing bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS).

“Rajarhat is one of the best places to set up a kennel since this is less congested, compared to other places. This will help the dogs concentrate and there will be less mental diversion,” a police officer said.
