The Saradha ponzi scam, that has already claimed a couple of lives in last few days, saw another investor committing suicide late Friday night in Purulia district. Tapan Biswas (36) was found hanging from the ceiling of his house at Balrampur, 50 km from Purulia town. He had deposited Rs 2 lakh in Saradha and was suffering from depression since the scam broke out.
“Biswas deposited around Rs 2 lakh with a Saradha agent named Pradeep Sahu. On Friday, he returned home and asked for food. Then he went upstairs and hanged himself,” said a family member.
This is the third suicide in the state since the scam broke out.
Urmila Pramanik (50), a resident of Baruipur in South24-Parganas district, who had invested Rs 30,000 with Saradha, set herself afire at her home last Sunday. Lakshman Ghorai, a resident of Diamond Harbour, consumed acid on the same day.
On Saturday, depositors staged a protest in Guna in North 24-Parganas demanding the return of their money. They alleged that they had deposited money with one Iliyas Shahji but the money was not returned even as the maturity period ended on Wednesday. Matters turned worse when depositors found that Shahji has gone into hiding.
