An eight year old girl died on Friday, a day after she was allegedly slapped by a teacher in school. Iftesham was the niece of former Member of Parliament and dissident Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Saifuddin Choudhury. The teacher is on the run.
An only child, Iftesham was a student of class two at Bidya Bharati School in Mominpur.
On Thursday afternoon, she was in a yoga class, when her teacher allegedly slapped her for failing to perform an exercise, the police said. Iftesham lost balance and hit her head against a wall. She complained of severe headache but the teacher, who couldn’t see any injuries, told her to continue. Soon, the child fainted and was rushed to the hospital.
“They called up her father, Masiur Choudhury, and asked if the child had an illness. Later, he was told that the girl had fallen ill and he should come to the school. Moments later, another call came and he was told to rush to the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI),” a family member said.
Iftesham was in a critical condition. A brain surgery was done and she was put on ventilator. Friday morning, she slipped into coma and died late in the night.
Deputy commissioner of police (port division) Anant Kumar said: “The child’s father had lodged a complaint against the teacher on Thursday. A case under Section 338 of the IPC (grievous hurt caused by negligence) was registered but as the child has died, we’ll book the teacher under Section 304 of the IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).”
The teacher, Anita Das, hasn’t reported to work after Thursday. School principal Anjana Mullick said strict action would be taken against Das, if found guilty.
