While the audience at the Salt Lake Stadium jived to the performance of Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone, most were ignorant about US rapper Pitbull. It goes without saying that Kolkatans gave more marks to the desi stars compared to the American rapper.

A couple from Dum Dum, Suparna and Somraj Dasgupta, had no idea about Pitbull’s songs. “It is only because of SRK that we are here,” said Somraj. Housewife Sushmita Das from Birati said, “I have come to watch SRK’s performance. I have no idea about Pitbull.” Imran and Nazma Ali had come from Chandannagore. “My wife is a fan of SRK. I have heard of Pitbull but I can’t understand the lyrics of his songs,” said Imran.

Teenagers were also ignorant about Pitbull. Devina Tiwari, a student of National Institute of Technology said, “I think Pitbull is a singer. I don’t know. I have come for Shah Rukh Khan.” Her friends, Shreya Saha and Shivangi too seemed clueless. Their friend, Kashinath was honest enough. “I have come to watch Katrina,” he grinned.

South Point Class 6 student Vikramjit Banerjee looked disinterested when asked about the singer. He had come down with his sister, Prerna Banerjee, a student of class 11, Mahadevi Birla High School to have a good time. Saptaarshwa Choudhury from Dhakuria gave a blank look when asked about Pitbull. His smile returned when we mentioned familiar names like Katrina and Deepika. Sayoni Chakraborty hit the nail on the head when she said, “I think our desi celebrities are more popular and better.”

However, HT did manage to spot a Pitbull fan. Speaking to HT, footballer Tolgay Ozbay who enjoyed the show with his girlfriend, “I am here to watch Pitbull’s performance. And of course, SRK,” he smiled.

The rapper though had a great time. Minutes after the show, he tweeted, “Finally my performance in India at the IPL opening ceremony... daleeeeee!”
