At least one out every three children and an equal number of women living in the Sunderbans are malnourished, a recent survey conducted a Rajasthan-based health care research university has revealed.
“One third children are chronically malnourished in the Sunderbans of which 60% are girls between the age group of 1- 3 years,” SD Gupta, president of the Indian Institute of Health Management Research Institute.
He also said that one out of every two children born in the Sunderban villages are born at home and not in any hospital or health clinics and only 5% of these births are actually assisted by medical practitioners.
Child feeding practices is another grey area in the villages of the Sunderbans. About 60% of the children didn’t receive their mother’s milk.
