An internal probe report submitted by the additional SP to Birbhum police chief confirmed the involvement of police in the torture of a village woman at Sattor village. The IG, DIG and SP met in an urgent meeting over the issue.

On Tuesday, SP Birbhum Alok Rajoria suspended accused SOG officer-in-charge Kartik Mohan Ghosh. He has also directed departmental proceedings against two constables of the SOG group. Show-cause letters have been issued against nine police officers of the district for their involvement.

Though the SP Birbhum was tight-lipped about revealing the names of officers show-caused, sources said several senior police officers, including SDPO Bolpur, CI Bolpur and several others police personnel have got a showcause letter.

On Tuesday morning, additional SP Birbhum Ananda Roy submitted internal probe report to SP Birbhum Alok Rajoria. Soon after that Ghosh was suspended, two SOG constables - Dipak Bauri and Kashinath Das - have to face departmental proceedings and nine others face show-cause letters.

Earlier on Monday, the district police chief indirectly admitted that police were involved in barbarism on village lady in the name of raid to search an accused person.

On Monday SP Birbhum Alok Rajoria said “in the raid there was nobody other than the police.”

On Saturday night in the name of raids, besides beating a woman the police had also allegedly rubbed nettle (bichuti) leaves on several parts of Hifunnesha Bibi’s body after taking her to a forest. Police have also allegedly split her right palm with sharp knife or blade. The woman is now under treatment at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital after she was referred from Suri Sadar Hospital.

On Saturday night Hifunnesha Bibi was at her father’s home at Kalamdanga village of Budbud police station area of Burdwan district. On Saturday, a police team headed by OC SOF Kartik Mohan Ghosh had raided Sattor village of Panrui police station area in search of Sk Mithun, a BJP worker.

Sources said that last Wednesday a clash took place between Trinamool and BJP men at Sattor and some people got injured. Trinamool claimed the injured were their supporters and among the accused the name of Mithun was there. Mithun was accused in bombing on the house of Trinamool men in the village.

As Mithun is absconding, police suspected that Mithun was hiding in the house of his aunt and they had conducted a raid there. But when the police did not find the accused, they tortured his aunt. Later on Sunday night, the husband of Hifunnesha Bibi, Sukur Sk, lodged an FIR against six persons, locally known as Trinamool workers, no police name was written on FIR, though allegations were against police.

On Tuesday afternoon, IG (Western Range) Sidhinath Gupta, DIG (Burdwan Range) Ajay Nanda and SP Birbhum Alok Rajoria met in an urgent close-door meeting at the SDPO office Bolpur.

After completing almost one and half hour long meeting no one wanted to comment on the meeting. “It is our internal departmental meeting… I have nothing to say,” said DIG (Burdwan Range) Ajay Nanda before his car left the office.
