Taxi strike in Kolkata

Taxis will go off Kolkata roads for an indefinite period from July 22 to press for various demands by operators including a hike in fares following upward revision of petrol and diesel prices, a leader of Bengal Taxi Association said on Tuesday.

BTA general secretary Bimal Guha said the taxi owners had met state Transport minister Subhas Chakraborty on Wednesday and placed their demands but there was no response.

The transport minister has already ruled out the transport fare hike in the wake of the fuel price rise.

President of Progressive Taximen's Association and Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra, however, said he had appealed to BTA not to resort to strike keeping in view the commuters' interest but they were adamant.
