Three passengers were killed and three others seriously injured after they fell off from a crowded train when hit by an electric post on the Sealdah-Ranaghat section of the Eastern Railways on Thursday.

Railway Police officials said the three of the six who fell off from the train between Belghoria and Dum Dum stations died on the spot.

The injured were first rushed to a hospital at Kamarhati and then shifted to NRS and R G Kar hospitals here in a critical condition.

Following the incident, angry passengers squatted on the tracks and disrupted movement of trains for over five hours, demanding compensation for the kins of those killed and injured, and removal of the electric posts.

However, the agitators gave the bodies to the authorities after they were assured that the electric posts would be removed.
