Three persons were killed in Dharsona village of Burdwan district after a clash over MNREGA jobs late on Wednesday night.

Those killed have been identified as Meher Sheikh (37), Qurban Sheikh (32) and her wife, Asthia Bibi (32). They died after some men hurled bombs at the house of Meher Sheikh, which is under Mangalkot police station.

Another woman, Rosina Bibi, was admitted to hospital. Locals said they were all supporters of Trinamool Congress. Speculations over the reason for the clash are varied.

Some people said the clash took place between two groups of Trinamool supporters, others said the violence took place between supporters of the CPI(M) and the ruling party.

Mangalkot is about 100 kms to the north of Kolkata, and the region came into the limelight when clashes broke out between the CPI(M) and Trinamool Bengal is one of the poor performers in the flagships scheme with the state recording 18 days of work on an average.

However, chief minister Mamata Banerjee claimed on Wednesday that her government has been able to push the number past 30.
