The first vote in the panchayat elections has not been cast but so confident is the Trinamool of sweeping the polls that preparations for victory celebrations have begun in Kolkata.
The poll results will be declared on July 29. The party has planned a mega-show on Shaheed Divas (‘Martyrs’ Day’), scheduled on August 21, expecting nearly 1 million supporters.
Leaders are confident the show will be bigger than the one they staged on July 21, 2011, following the rout of the Left Front after 34 years.
“We expect lakhs of people to turn up in the city, where our leader, Mamata Banerjee, will show the roadmap for the future,” said Sultan Ahmed, Lok Sabha MP and party core committee member.
Ruling party leaders have told Hindustan Times all their victorious candidates at each of the three levels of polls will be invited.
Intellectuals too will be invited, with a special place reserved for a singer who is now accompanying Trinamool chief Banerjee on most of her campaigns.
“A section of the media, the CPI(M) and the Congress have initiated attacks and plotted a conspiracy against us. We’ll show we’re the last word in Bengal,” Subhendu Adhikari, Lok Sabha MP and head of the party’s youth wing, told Hindustan Times.
The TMC has already secured more than 5,500 seats uncontested. It is expecting to sweep in at least 12 of the 18 districts, which will see elections in five phases, beginning on July 11.
