Police on Thursday night arrested a senior business development manager of Saradha, along with his wife, from the number one government colony of Malda town for cheating depositors of several crores.
Sources said that Debasish Deb Sharma had collected over R5 crore in the last few years. He was one of the top bosses of the company in north Bengal.
An agent said that for the last few months, neither the agents who worked under
Deb Sharma nor the depositors were getting payment. Sources said that Deb Sharma came to know that Saradha may collapse any time and reportedly told agents of the company in the first week of April that the chit fund entity has over 553 decimal of land at a prime location in Malda. He said he would arrange for the sale of this land to pay depositors.
Deb Sharma met owner Sudipta Sen before the latter fled from Kolkata and obtained the power of attorney to sell off this plot. He registered the plot in the name of his wife, Manashi. But he didn’t pay a single penny to any agent or depositor.
They have been remanded in judicial custody.
