A girl missing for eight months and trafficked to Odisha was rescued on Friday. The accused has been arrested and the police have started a probe.
Soma (name changed), a 13-year-old girl from Bhamal, a village in Gopiballabpur-II block of Jhargram, was given a false promise of marriage by Syamal Mahali. After she agreed she was kidnapped on June 6, 2014 and was missing since. She was found on February 21, 2015 in Sankrail.
She was taken to Barida, in Keshiyari block and kept there for two days. After she resisted she was taken to Cuttack. She was being held there for seven months and was tortured and sexually violated by multiple people. Reports suggest repeated use of country liquor to keep her in unconscious state during these months.
Soma escaped from Odisha and reached Sankrail on February 14, 2015. Reportedly, Syamal (her kidnapper) followed her till Sankrail and then convinced her to return home. She was then kept in Gurigot, a village in Sankrail where again she was constantly violated before she escaped on February 21.
A worker of the organisation, Suchetana Mahila Sangstha, found her in Kultikiri village in Sankrail where she was sitting in Hatchala market. Reportedly she was informed that her family will not accept her as she was out for eight months and she was seeking poison. She was finally taken to the block coordinator Manashi Ghosh Patra at around 4.45 pm on Saturday.
Patra then contacted the local police station of Keshiapata. The Inspector-in-chief (IC) of Keshiapata police station, Mohammad Hasan Ujjaman Mulla, reportedly rejected her.
On finally contacting the ASP Ajit Singh Yadav, she was finally taken by the child line in West Midnapore. Syamal has been arrested and will be produced in court on Monday. The girl is currently kept in Kharagpur reception home and will be submitted to Vidyasagar Balika home in West Midnapore on Tuesday.
