Trinamool Congress leader Ashish Dey who brandished a gun inside a private hospital in Suri in Birbhum district on Friday, about 200 kms north of Kolkata, surrendered before police in the wee hours on Monday. Dey wanted to settle scores with a doctor and went with a gun when the doctor was treating patients at the hospital.

On Friday night, Dey along with his associates stormed into the hospital and heckled hospital staff present there. CCTV footage clearly showed him whipping out a gun and chasing staff on duty.

But on being quizzed, Dey maintained that the whole incident is premeditated to defame him and the CCTV footage is morphed.

“Local MP Shatabdi Roy and MLA Swapan Ghosh are behind the whole incident. Ghosh is a lunatic,” Dey alleged.

Incidentally, Roy and Ghosh both belong to the ruling Trinamool Congress. Right after the incident, senior party leaders have gone into denial mode claiming that Dey was suspended from the party long back.

“Dey does not belong to the party. He was suspended by our party general secretary Mukul Roy long back. But he does all illegal works in the name of our party,” alleged Bolpur MP Shatabdi Roy. Birbhum district party president Anubrata Mondal echoed her.

Recent video footages contradicted Roy’s claims as they showed Dey alongside Mondal, Mukul Roy, industry minister Partha Chatterjee and planning minister Chandranath Singh in party programmes.

Dey’s incident embroils the ruling party in another controversy in the same district even before the Loba firing incident keep snowballing into a major affront.

Asish Dey would be produced in court on Monday.
