West Bengal's panchayat minister and senior Trinamool leader Subrata Mukherjee has slammed the Centre for putting up an advertisement in newspapers urging state governments to reduce tax on diesel to give the commoners some relief.

"This is an example of mean-minded politics and a deliberate ploy to weaken the states financially. The Centre should first reduce its taxes," Mukherjee said.

He said that party chief Mamata Banerjee was the first to reduce sales tax on cooking gas to give relief to the commoners and it was only then that Congress president Sonia Gandhi asked the chief ministers of Congress-ruled states to follow Banerjee's move.
