Two more accused in the Durgapur gangrape case were arrested from the City Centre area in Durgapur subdivision of Burdwan late Saturday night.

The arrested duo have been identified as Raju Bauri and Paban Halder and they were later produced before the Durgapur sub-divisional court and sentenced to jail custody.

The arrests on the day took the total number of arrests in the case to 14 and the sleuths are currently on the lookout for a few more suspects in the case. The vicitim was reportedly summoned for a TI (test identification) parade at the Durgapur sub-correctional home back on September 14 and identified 10 of her tormentors.

The victim had reportedly struck a deep friendship with one of the doctors at the diagnostic centre she was employed at, leading to a growing discord and friction with her husband. A few weeks back, the victim along with her doctor friend stopped at a hotel near Nigha around 9.30pm for food and beverages. That was when the accused started tailing the duo.

The duo later left in the doctor’s car, but they hadn’t gone far when cops at the Waria outpost asked the couple to pull over and quizzed them on where they were headed so late in the night. The victim said that they were colleagues at an Asansol diagnostic centre and that they were headed to her Durgapur residence.

However, the sleuths didn’t buy her claim, prompting the victim to ring up her husband. The husband reportedly corroborated her claim to the police, saying he was awaiting her return at home.

The duo was then allowed to leave and soon reached Piyala Kali Mandir near the City Centre and waited for the victim’s husband to come and lead her home. However, her husband flew into a rage after seeing her with her doctor friend and the trio soon fell into a bitter argument.

Rajesh Kora, the prime accused, had meanwhile been listening in on the acrimonious exchanges, and called his partners in crime over phone. The associates soon joined Kora at the spot and they began making lewd passes at the woman.

As the gang swelled in numbers, the doctor friend melted away. The accused then pounced on the victim, dragged her into a bush and took turns to rape her. However, her husband had by then managed to put a call through to the police. The sleuths soon rushed in and found the woman sitting at a nearby temple, her clothes in tatters.
