Two days after the shocking incident in which a 10-year old girl was forced by a Visva-Bharati (VB) hostel warden to drink her own urine after she wet her bed, police arrested the parents of the victim on charges of trespassing and endangering the security of the campus.

After the incident on Saturday, the parents came to the hostel and took their daughter back home after lodging a complaint with both the police and Visva-Bharati authorities.

An FIR was filed by the Visva-Bharati registrar against the child’s parents on charges of illegal trespassing and endangering the security of the campus. The child’s parents too were produced in Bolpur court and subsequently granted bail.

On Monday, the accused warden Uma Poddar surrendered before Bolpur police and was also granted bail by the Bolpur court.

On the other hand, members of the Visva-Bharati University alumni have decided to pursue the matter.

“We will hold a sit-in demonstration in front of Kanch mandir and hold a signature campaign against the incident. The signatures and application will be sent to the President of India who is a visitor to VBU, the Prime Minister who is the chancellor and governor who is the rector. Such an incident is unpardonable and against the ethos of Rabindranath Tagore’s concept of joyful learning,” said Subodh Mitra, ashramite and alumni of VBU.

A facebook campaign is also going on simultaneously against the incident.

Under tremendous pressure from many quarters, the VB vice chancellor has decided to hold a press conference.
