A few days after West Bengal topped the league of Indian states in crimes against women, a headmaster of a private school was arrested on charges of molesting three girls, aged six, eight and 10 years, in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district of the state.
The girls – studying in KG, Upper KG and Class 2 at Rabidas Adarsha Vidyalaya---had told their parents that the 54-year-old Bijoy Shau had been molesting them for the past few days.
Shau and one more teacher comprise the faculty of the school, which has classes up to the seventh standard but only 14 students currently. Since the other teacher had gone on leave, Shau allegedly took advantage of his absence and molested the girls, all of whom come from poor families in Tangra area of Kolkata.
The police said they will present the accused in court on Sunday and charge him under section 354 of IPC, which deals with assault or criminal force aimed at outraging the modesty of a woman.
The incident came as a shock in a state rocked by a series of rapes and murders in Barasat, Gaighata and Nadia.
In Kurseong recently, a block development officer, Swapan Kumar Bhattacharjee, allegedly molested a 16-year old girl when she went to his chamber to get some documents attested.
In another case in September 2012, Malay Shankar Aich, a juvenile board officer, was arrested on charges of molesting a 14-year old girl in Murshidabad district in West Bengal. The accused was one of the officers investigating a rape case in which the girl was a victim.
Aich, aged 50, took over the investigation and often visited the girl’s home. The teen had been allegedly raped by a 17-year-old boy. The girl parents alleged Aich would order them out and then molest the minor. He also had allegedly called the girl to his office several times and molested her.
