Khargram police of Murshidabad arrested a primary schoolteacher on Tuesday morning from Sherpur village for marrying a minor.

The girl’s father was also arrested for forcing his daughter to marry the teacher, who is 21 years older than her.

Police sources said that on Monday night when the patrolling team of Khargram police was passing through Sherpur village they found a girl moving aimlessly in the street.

After inter rogating the girl, the police came to know that her father had forcefully married her off to the schoolteacher.

The girl was not ready for a physical relation and she had fled from her husband’s house.

A senior officer of Khargram police station said, “The girl has been identified as Asma Khatun (16). She is a resident of Akumba village of Barwan police station area.
On 13th of this month Asma’s father, Md Soyebsk, who works in a garment factory at NadialKolkata, married her to a teacher of Asolpur Primary School, Mojibur Rahaman Khan (37). Khan is a resident of Sherpur area of Khargram.

The officer said that Asma’s father didn’t take her consent before the marriage and the ‘Nikah’ took place in the house of Khan on September 13.

After the marriage, Md. Soyebsk was forcing his daughter to enter into a physical relationship with Khan.

But the minor girl was not ready to listen to her father. On Monday night, somehow Asma fled from Khan’s house. The police team rescued her.

The police took her to Khargram BDO.

The girl gave a written complaint to the BDO against her father and her husband. The police arrested both the accused.

Murshidabad SP Humayun Kabir said, “We have arrested both the teacher and the father. We have come to know that the teacher is a distant relative of the victim. The teacher is already married and his wife stays at Rampurhat with a child. After a dispute with the first wife, the teacher again married this minor girl.”

Kabir said, “A case has been initiated against both the teacher and the victim girl’s father under section 494 of IPC and prohibition of child marriage act.”
