The wife of a Congress MP from West Bengal tried to commit suicide by taking sleeping pills and is in critical condition. Her daughter had ended her life by jumping from a high-rise last October.

Arpita Chowdhury, wife of Murshidabad strongman Adhir Chowdhury, has been put on saline drip and oxygen in a private hospital following her suicide attempt late on Wednesday. She was taken to a private hospital near Khagraghat in Murshidabad district.

Chowdhury's teenaged daughter, Shreyashi Chowdhury, had jumped from a high-rise at Golpark in Kolkata. She died in a city hospital later.

Adhir Chowdhury, MP from Behrampore constituency in Murshidabad, was informed about the incident when he returned from his party campaign.

Senior district Congress leaders, including Murshidabad Town Congress president Atish Sinha, went to see Arpita in the hospital.

The local police did not interrogate Arpita considering her condition.
