A woman, along with some locals, raided a Malda police outpost on Saturday and beat up the officer-in-charge over an alleged molestation bid.
Sources said Sanat Biswas, the officer-in-charge of the outpost in the Harishchandrapur police station area of Malda, was hit with slippers after being accused of making lewd passes at the woman.
According to local sources, the woman at the centre of the molestation row and a resident of Bhaluka-Darbhangatola village is married and has two sons. However, the husband had been living away since taking up a job at a stone quarry at Katihar in Bihar.
Sources said trouble broke around five days back after the woman got into a quarrel with a neighbour over a disputed piece of land. It was alleged that the neighbour, along with some locals, beat up the woman and her sons.
Later that day, the woman moved a complaint against her neighbour at the Bhaluka police outpost.
Sources claimed none from the police outpost cared to probe the case. They said the neighbour threatened the woman and stepped up pressure on her to withdraw the complaint.
Undeterred, the woman went to the outpost on Saturday to enquire about the progress in the case.
However, far from filling her in on the case, the officer-in-charge got into an argument with her. As matters came to a head, the cop allegedly abused and molested the woman.
The woman got back to the village and narrated the events to locals. Soon, she ganged up with some villagers and raided the police outpost.
Sources said she took off her slippers before rained blows on the cop.
The locals too turned on the cop and bashed him up. Later, some constables rushed to his rescue.
“I had been to the police outpost to enquire why they hadn’t arrested the person who beat me up. However, the officer abused me and refused to help me get justice,” the woman said.
“As I tried to protest, he grabbed my hand and made a lewd proposal. He then molested me,” she said.
“We’ll act against those involved in the assault on our officer. We’ll arrest everyone,” Malda SP Prasun Banerjee said.
Not one to give up easily, the woman said, “I’ll move a complaint against the officer for molestation.”
